Do Poo Bags Really Biodegrade? What to Look for When Buying Eco Options

Biodegradable, compostable, eco-friendly… the labels sound good, but what do they really mean?

If you’ve ever stood in a pet shop aisle trying to work out whether the “eco-friendly” poo bags are genuinely better—or just more expensive—you’re not alone.

Unfortunately, the world of biodegradable dog waste bags is full of greenwashing. Here’s how to spot the good from the gimmicks.

What Does ‘Biodegradable’ Actually Mean?

In simple terms, a biodegradable material breaks down over time through natural processes (usually by bacteria or fungi).

But how it breaks down—and where—makes a big difference.

  • Biodegradable can mean anything that breaks down eventually
  • Compostable means it breaks down safely and completely in composting conditions
  • Oxo-degradable bags break down into microplastics, not compost—and are banned in some countries

So, just seeing the word biodegradable isn’t enough.

The Certifications That Matter

Look for these if you want a bag that genuinely breaks down in a safe and eco-conscious way:

  • EN13432 (EU/UK standard for industrial composting)
  • ASTM D6400 (North American equivalent)
  • TUV OK Compost or TUV OK Home Compost (for bags that break down at lower temperatures)

If the packaging doesn’t carry a clear certification, assume it’s marketing fluff.

Can You Compost Dog Waste at Home?

Not in your normal compost bin.

Dog poo can carry parasites and bacteria that aren’t killed off in home composting systems. It needs specialist pet waste composting (which most households don’t have).

Some councils and third-party services may offer pet waste composting, but in most of Hertfordshire, general waste disposal is still the best option.

Best Practice for Eco-Conscious Dog Owners

Until composting becomes more accessible, here’s what you can do:

  • Choose compostable bags with proper certifications
  • Store bags out of direct sunlight to prevent premature breakdown
  • Double-check local council rules before using public bins
  • Avoid oxo-degradable plastics entirely

And always, always pick up; an unbagged poo left on the ground is far worse for the environment than even the cheapest plastic bag.

Recommended Brands to Look Out For

While offerings change frequently, these brands are known for transparency and certification:

  • Beco Bags (widely available and EN13432 certified)
  • Adios Plastic (home compostable, TUV certified
  • Fetch It (eco bags with minimal packaging)
  • BioBag (compostable, EU-certified)
  • Earth Rated (made with 65% certified post-consumer recycled plastic)

Check their websites for details and certifications; some also offer carbon-neutral shipping or donate to environmental causes.

What About Flushing?

Some products claim you can flush pet waste. In most UK homes, it’s not recommended. Septic systems and older plumbing often can’t handle it, and parasites like Toxocara can survive standard sewage treatment.

Stick to bag and bin. Done properly, it’s still the safest method.

The Last Woof

Biodegradable poo bags can be better for the planet, but only when they’re the real deal.

If you’re already going to the trouble of picking up after your dog, it’s worth choosing a bag that’s doing its bit too.
